Why the Classic Trio Is Still Your First Uber Stop
Every Hero Siege season has a moment where your build is “done enough” and the question becomes: which Uber first? The community’s answer has not changed in years — Damien, Reaper and Sung Lee, the original Uber trio. They are the oldest, most-documented, mechanically cleanest fights on the Uber tier, which makes them the ideal classroom for the fight grammar every later Uber assumes you know.
They are not a nostalgia tier, either: the trio remains a consistent high-tier loot source, a reliable first-kill milestone for any new season’s character, and the practice ground where your build’s weaknesses show up cheaply instead of catastrophically.
The Trio at a Glance
| Boss | Fight identity | What it tests |
|---|---|---|
| Damien | The classic first Uber — aggressive melee pressure with telegraphed bursts | Positioning discipline and burst windows |
| Reaper | Sustained area denial and pressure over a longer fight | Stamina: resource management and consistent dodging |
| Sung Lee | The trio’s mechanical exam — layered patterns and phase transitions | Pattern memory and calm execution under pressure |
Benderdin’s dedicated trio guide remains the community’s standard single-video walkthrough of all three fights, and it pairs well with a first attempt: watch the pattern once, then go die productively.

Fight Fundamentals: What the Trio Teaches
Each member of the trio isolates one Uber-tier skill:
- Damien teaches burst windows. His pressure comes in waves — the fight is a rhythm of survive-then-punish. Learning to hold your big damage for the window (instead of dumping on cooldown) is the transferable skill.
- Reaper teaches endurance. The longer fight format makes resource waste fatal: consumable timing, sustain uptime, and avoiding greedy trades. This is where builds with thin sustain discover their ceiling — often a sign to revisit the defensive spine of your Incarnation Tree.
- Sung Lee teaches pattern memory. Layered, multi-phase mechanics with real punish windows. He is the trio’s exam because he combines what the first two taught — and the exam is exactly what the newer Uber tier grades harder.
Preparation: Your First Trio Attempt
- Convert your starter first. The trio assumes an endgame-form build: core items in place, talents finished. If you are still running your leveling shell, finish the conversion — our league starter builds page shows what “converted” looks like.
- Bring sustain, then more sustain. The most common trio death is the third phase of Reaper with no consumables left. Budget for five attempts, not one.
- Farm one difficulty below your ambition. Trio kills on Hell fund the gear that makes Inferno attempts realistic. See the uniques overview for what you are actually fishing for.
- Watch one pattern video, then fight. Over-watching builds superstition; the fights reward doing. One walkthrough pass is enough context.
Where the Trio Fits in Season 10’s Uber Ladder
Season 10 (Ebontharn) added three new Ubers above the old tiers — Phantom Leviathan, Captain Grimtide and Blood Maiden — and they are now the marquee targets, with the Phantom Leviathan loot pool flagged by the community as a top farming priority. Below them sit the mid-tier modern Ubers (Gabriel, Amun Ra, Luna), and below those, the classic trio.
The intended ladder for a seasonal character runs bottom-up: trio → Gabriel/Amun Ra/Luna → the three Ebontharn Ubers. Every step funds the next — trio kills pay for gear, mid-tier kills pay for the build that handles the new tier. Our Uber bosses overview maps the full roster, and once your trio runs are routine, the Season 10 guide covers what the new tier changes.
FAQ
Are the classic Ubers required progression? No Uber is strictly required — but the trio is the de facto gateway: their loot and the practice they provide make everything above them dramatically cheaper.
Can the trio be killed solo? Yes, and solo trio kills are the community’s standard benchmark for “my build works.” Co-op works fine and splits pressure, at the cost of scaled encounter difficulty.
Which of the three is hardest? Community consensus puts Sung Lee last in difficulty within the trio — he is the mechanical exam — while Damien is the usual first kill.
My build melts packs but dies to Reapers. Why? Pack clearing rewards offense; Ubers test sustain and discipline. Add defensive talents and consumable discipline before touching damage again — the tier list page explains how each class typically patches this gap.
